CityPoem 96 – Amsterdam

CityPoem 96 – Amsterdam

Er was eens een man
zijn hart beklemd door twee handen van droefheid
Hij keek uit over het dok volgestouwd met schepen
zoals zijn hart een haven vol treurnis was

There once was a man
His heart blocked by two hands of sadness
He watched out over the dock crammed with ships
Like his heart a harbour of sorrow

–Carla Bogaards

This section from a poem of Carla Bogaards can be found on the halfround embankment of the Hollandse Tuin. The words have been carved into granite plates by a sculptor, and have been painted bright orange. The idea for the poem rose from the initiative to ‘give Amsterdam back its poems’.
